DESCRIPTION:A day for reflection\, recovery\, and engagement\n\n\n\nNOTE: This Day of Mindfulness will be held at East Bay Meditation Center (EBMC). See details below. \n\n\n\nWith cruelty and injustice in the world running rampant every day\, it can seem difficult to know what to do. \n\n\n\nWe invite you — activists\, advocates\, practitioners\, and all who support the creation of a better world — to gather for a day of mindfulness at EBMC. \n\n\n\nOur purpose\, first\, is to rest and recover our strength. If you have been protesting\, come and let the sangha hold you for a day. \n\n\n\nA second purpose is for mindful discussion about where we find hope\, and how our actions might help realize our hopes. \n\n\n\nDharma teacher Victoria Mausisa will be offering a teaching\, and other members of the NorCal Plum Village community will lead practices like sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, and eating meditation. Please bring a vegetarian lunch. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome! \n\n\n\n\nAdd your name to the registration list\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEast Bay Meditation Center is approximately 3–4 blocks from 19th Street BART in Oakland. To attend in person\, you need to be completely free of fragranced body and clothing products. \n\n\n\nEBMC is wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\nOpportunity for Dana: \n\n\n\nWe joyfully receive your dana/donations as acts of generosity and want you to know your presence is enough. For transparency\, we are renting EBMC for $250 to host this day together. \n\n\n\nTo support this Day of Mindfulness and help cover the space rental at EBMC\, please consider sending a donation ahead of time\, via Venmo to @JennaD7 . \n\n\n\n\nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Zoom tea time with Sr. Dinh Nghiem - update on her activities and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Dear NorCal sangha friend\, \n\n\n\nYou are warmly invited to a Zoom tea time with Sr. Định Nghiêm from New Hamlet\, Plum Village\, France. \n\n\n\nShe is again spending some time in the Bay Area with family and would love to gather with our Northern California sangha over a cup of tea. \n\n\n\nBring your tea and come ready to enjoy a casual get-together. Sr. Dinh Nghiem will guide us in tea meditation\, and then we will open up the space for Q&A. \n\n\n\nPlease email questions beforehand to isabellechappuis@yahoo.com. \n\n\n\nDay and time: Thursday\, January 22\, 7-8:30pm \n\n\n\nFor the Zoom link\, please see the NorCal Sangha News list\, or contact Isabelle (Yen Chi)\, at isabellechappuis@yahoo.com. \n\n\n\nNote: The Zoom can accommodate 100 people. If we have more than that\, we will try to make a recording and share it later. \n\n\n\nAbout Sister Định Nghiêm: \n\n\n\nBorn in Vietnam\, Sister Dinh Nghiem came to France in 1983. \n\n\n\nShe had most of her education in France\, started college in Paris and continued at UC Berkeley in California. She was ordained as a nun by Thay in Plum Village in 1993. She received the monastic training directly from Thay and 6 years later\, received the lamp transmission from him in 1999. \n\n\n\nShe became the acting abbess of the New Hamlet of Plum Village in 2000\, the youngest acting-abbess at that time\, and thus opened the path for the tradition of Plum Village to name young acting-abbesses and acting-abbots. After several requests to Thay to renounce acting-abbesshood in order to devote more time to her passion which is translating and publishing Thay’s work\, he finally accepted in 2007. \n\n\n\nSister Dinh Nghiem played a central role in the publishing of the most recent book on Thay’s long biography in Vietnamese (Encountering with Spring) and of numerous of Thay’s books in French such as Call Me By My True Name\, Chanting from the Heart\, Ceremonies from the Heart\, Intimate Conversation with the Buddha\, Peace at every Breath\, Inside the Now\, and the revised edition of The Blooming of the Lotus. \n\n\n\nDuring her entire monastic life\, Sister Dinh Nghiem was a close attendant of Thay’s and had the privilege to travel with him on his tours all over the world since 1995. \n\n\n\nSince 2014\, Sister Dinh Nghiem was one of Thay’s main attendants and remained by his side until his last day. After Thay became a cloud in 2022\, she returned to the New Hamlet to profound happiness in dedicating herself to continuing Thay’s work\, sharing the practice and building lay and monastic sanghas\, especially the francophone sanghas. She is currently offering an online Sutra Study course to francophone speakers. \n\n\n\nHere is an article by Sr. Dinh Nghiem\, part 1 of 3\, recounting the seven years after Thay’s stroke (in French).

SUMMARY:Reducing Implicit Bias Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday Jan 8\, one of our local Plum Village practitioners\, Chris Punongbayan\, will offer a special workshop for us (and whoever else would like to join!) on the topic of Reducing Implicit Bias. This is a practical application of our Buddhist training of non-discrimination and inclusivity. \n\n\n\nDate: Thursday Jan 8\, 6-7:30pm \n\n\n\nLocation: Interfaith Chapel @ UUSF (1187 Franklin St. in San Francisco) \n\n\n\nWorkshop Description Implicit bias is part and parcel of the human experience\, but it is nonetheless a taboo subject. Implicit biases are learned from a lifetime of social conditioning\, but they can also be unlearned and overcome. This training will provide an overview of: what implicit bias is\, the harmful effects of implicit bias in society\, and techniques to retrain the mind to minimize the occurrence of implicit bias. The session will include traditional mindfulness practices including a closing session on confronting the effects that implicit bias has had on participants in their own lives. \n\n\n\nThe workshop is freely offered\, with the option to help donate for rental of the space. \n\n\n\nBioChris Punongbayan (he/him) is yoga and mindfulness teacher and recovering lawyer. He draws inspiration from all of the diverse peacemakers striving to make the world fairer and more just. Chris profoundly believes in giving voice to the unheard\, breaking down barriers\, and creating strategic alliances to advance equity. He has a loving family with his husband including two kids adopted from the foster system and three cats\, two of whom were adopted from the SPCA. He is a 500-YTT certified yoga teacher and is a lead teacher for the 2026 Mindfulness for Lawyers Teacher Training program.  He currently serves as the Executive Director of California ChangeLawyers\, a community foundation whose mission is to build a better justice system and is  the proud son of immigrants from the Philippines.

We will observe noble silence from after the evening program until the end of lunchtime the next day. In the afternoons and evenings\, there will be time for mindful conversation.  \n\n\n\nQuaker Center is a beautiful retreat among the redwoods and oak trees in the hills above Santa Cruz. It is a quiet\, peaceful location where the Plum Village community has been holding retreats for many years.  \n\n\n\nDate/Time: The retreat will begin Friday\, November 7 at 6pm PT and end Monday\, November 10\, 2025 after lunch.  \n\n\n\nThere will also be a writing workshop facilitated by Maxine Hong Kingston from 10am – 4pm on Friday\, November 7. You can register for the retreat alone\, the workshop alone\, or for both.   \n\n\n\nRetreat meals will be provided by the wonderful chef Tod Nysether\, starting Friday evening through Monday lunch. \n\n\n\nTeachers: We are excited that Maxine Hong Kingston and Wendy Johnson have agreed to be our dharma teachers for this retreat\, with Maxine leading an additional writing workshop during the day on Friday!  \n\n\n\nEarll Kingston\, Maxine Hong Kingston\, and Wendy Johnson at the 2024 Veteran’s Day retreat. \n\n\n\nCosts: The cost of the retreat will vary by sleeping arrangement.  \n\n\n\n\nFor a room with 2 beds the cost per person will be $500 for the entire retreat\, food included. \n\n\n\nFor a dorm room that sleeps 4-6\, or for tent campers\, the cost will be $375 per person for the entire retreat\, food included. \n\n\n\nWe are happy to be able to offer some scholarships for BIPOC\, Wake Up\, and Veteran retreatants. Scholarships of 25% or 50% are available. \n\n\n\n\nThe workshop will cost $60\, and will help fund scholarships to the retreat. We also welcome donations to the scholarship fund. \n\n\n\nRegistration link: https://forms.gle/84xwNZwJYEYpGjgy5  \n\n\n\nPlease fill out the information requested in this Google Form by Friday October 10. SUMMARY:Tea with Sister Dinh Nghiem
DESCRIPTION:Dear NorCal sangha friend\, \n\n\n\nYou are warmly invited to a Zoom tea time with Sr. Định Nghiêm from New Hamlet\, Plum Village\, France. \n\n\n\nShe has been spending some time in the Bay Area with family and would love to meet our Northern California sangha over a cup of tea. \n\n\n\nBring your tea and come ready to enjoy a casual get-together. Sr. Dinh Nghiem will guide us in tea meditation\, and then we will open up the space for Q&A. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you! \n\n\n\nDay and time: Thursday\, March 6\, 7-8:30pm \n\n\n\nFor the Zoom link\, please see the NorCal email list\, or contact Isabelle (Yen Chi)\, at isabellechappuis@yahoo.com. \n\n\n\nNote: The Zoom can accommodate 100 people. If we have more than that\, we will try to make a recording and share it later. \n\n\n\nAbout Sister Định Nghiêm: \n\n\n\n\nBorn in Vietnam\, Sister Dinh Nghiem came to France in 1983. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSister Dinh Nghiem (Sr. Định Nghiêm) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSister Chan Khong\, with Sister Dinh Nghiem (left) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThích Nghat Hạnh (front row\, center)\, surrounded by other monastics\, including Sister Dinh Nghiem (front row\, right).
